It’s T-minus 20 days to the application deadline and Anchorage needs to get fired up (or maybe lit up) about the Google Fiber Initiative! If you’re not familiar with this “contest”, let me explain. WiMax arrives in Anchorage

AT&T quietly rolled the announcement on their homepage recently that WiMax is now available in the Anchorage area. Reading the fine print, it’s obvious they’re not reaching everywhere in town yet.  The $19.95 price point looks attractive at first, but you can quickly deduct they are trying to rope you in on the low end bundle deal with local and long-distance plans then tacking on the less-than-interesting 384K Internet option.  As much as I am really excited about WiMax, this really stinks. Remember the days of $19.99 internet where you bought a basic 28.8K or even better yet a V.92 56K dial-up account?  Yeah, it sucked – but in many ways I long for those days and I’ll tell you why.

WiMAX alternative to DSL and cable

While I am not at liberty to divulge all the juicy details, I have it on pretty good authority that at&t Alascom will be rolling out WiMAX in the Anchorage area this year. They’ve been in Juneau since last fall and have been testing here in Anchorage for several months.

The golden question is: Will it compete with DSL/cable internet?

ISPs kill the video star

Many have been debating the “format war” between HD-DVD and Sony’s Blu-ray about who will become the (HD) high definition DVD standard, but the real HD war is just beginning.
