Many have been debating the “format war” between HD-DVD and Sony’s Blu-ray about who will become the (HD) high definition DVD standard, but the real HD war is just beginning. Faster Internet for Alaska?

Rumor has it that GCI is talking about a significant speed increase in their cable modem products. The word is that speeds as high as 10Mb/s down with 1Mb/s up are scheduled to hit sometime soon. I assume that this means GCI is again pioneering the new cable modem standards as they have done in the past. Comcast recently announced their plans at CES 2008 to make 100Gb/s internet access via their cable network using DOCSIS 3.0. Knowing GCI, they’ve already got DOCSIS 3.0 in place and are just waiting to pull the trigger.

We’re all waiting GCI… don’t disappoint us.

GCI Hijacks Customer Browsers

DNS redirections, how annoying

Apparently the fine folks at GCI aren’t making enough off their customers by selling bundled packages and burying the best Internet options deep inside the most expensive plans. They’ve gone and fiddled with the default DHCP/DNS settings that causes redirects to their branded Yahoo! search page when a user enters words in the URL path of their browser. Can they really be that desperate for a few click-through dollars? Did anyone really ask for this “feature”?

PayPal password puzzle

Holy f—ing crap Batman, it took about an hour to reset my PayPal password today!
It all began with a quick search on eBay for an XBOX 360 Elite system. I’ve been thinking of upgrading to the Elite and found out quickly that nearly all the usual suspects like Best Buy, Amazon.com and Target did not have them in stock. What should have been a casual scan of eBay turned into a giant fiasco.

The iPhone arrives late to Alaska

It’s official, AT&T has announced they are taking over all the CellularOne business inside Alaska. According to reports, you can now get the iPhone as soon as December 9, 2007. No doubt this will be one of the most popular Christmas wishes for many Alaskans this holiday season. (more…)
