3G in Alaska

8 Apr

3G is available throughout Alaska Update: 12 June 2010
Many people ask whether or not their iPhone, Blackberry or Android phones will work in Alaska. The short answer is YES, there is AT&T service most towns around the state of Alaska. AT&T 3G service is available in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and Wasilla. For Verizon or Sprint customers, you’ll most likely be able to get access via ACS service.

Update: 26 May 2009:
Reports are beginning to come in that 3G is now active in the Anchorage and Wasilla areas. Karen Whitworth mentioned via Twitter that she is now getting 3G in Wasilla.

The debate (and wild guesstimates for the launch date) rage on about whether 3G will ever arrive in Alaska. We’re approaching the 3rd generation of the iPhone and yet we in Alaska haven’t even experienced the first generation of 3G. Check out the original post and comments here.

I was chatting with an local AT&T engineer and it was stated that we should see it turned up the end of May.

The operative word being “should.” In other words, “maybe, maybe not.”

SO is this a for sure thing about Juneau getting 3g service soon and if so…ballpark, when? A rep said it was up in the air between Fairbanks and us in Juneau…I say that since we are the capital we should have it first? And as usual he laughed at me..(people always laugh at me for some reason?).

Living in Juneau, I’d say Fairbanks first. They are a bigger community and as such a bigger market. That being said, I think it is correct that Fairbanks and Juneau will be getting 3g service soon. I think we’re just about there.

Two new towers have been announced in Juneau. One downtown to serve the cruise ship, but also to reach some areas of old Juneau where the signal wasn’t quite up to parr. Another one near Salmon Creek (Hospital intersection), I’d guess that will also aid coverage in parts of middle Douglas Island.

I’m guessing the 3G hardware is in too, as there is some additional hardware on these towers. I think there is some event with AT&T on the 27th or 29th of September – maybe that is the date of implementation of 3G here in Juneau.
